Coimbra, Portugal, holds a unique allure for pilgrims, boasting historical sites and spiritual significance.
One such site is the Discalced Carmelite Convent, where Sister Lucia, one of the visionaries of Fatima, resided for much of her life until her passing in 2005. Upon entering the convent, she adopted the name Sister Mary Lucia of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart. While visits to the convent’s interior are restricted, visitors are invited to a glimpse of this sacred space from the outside, allowing pilgrims to connect with Sister Lucy’s profound legacy and the spiritual resonance of her devoted life.
In addition to the Discalced Carmelite Convent, Coimbra is home to the “New” Cathedral of the Holy Name of Jesus, a historic landmark with roots dating back to 1543. Originally serving as the church of the Jesuit’s University College in Coimbra, this cathedral bears witness to centuries of religious and academic significance. Its facade, adorned with statues of four Jesuit saints, stands as a testament to the city’s rich cultural heritage and enduring devotion to the Catholic faith. Our tour provides an opportunity to admire the architectural grandeur of the New Cathedral and contemplate the profound influence of Jesuit spirituality on Coimbra’s history and identity.
